LYNCHBURG, VA — East Carolina rallied again at Liberty to complete a sweep on Sunday with an 8-4 win.
The No. 11 Pirates (10-4) trailed 3-0 on Saturday before coming back for a 5-3 victory.
The Flames (5-10) had a 4-2 advantage through four innings in the final game of the series.
“People will look at Liberty’s record and think that was an easy series sweep,” said ECU coach Cliff Godwin on the Pirates radio network. “It was not.”
Camden Troyer had a 2-run homer in the bottom of the first to tie the score and Aidan Sweatt gave the hosts a 3-2 lead with an RBI single up the middle in the third.
ECU scored three runs in the fifth and led the rest of the way.
Carter Cunningham’s RBI single pulled the Pirates within 4-3. Jacob Jenkins-Cowart brought in Ryley Johnson with the tying run on a single to right. Cunningham scored on a sacrifice bunt by Jacob Starling for a 5-4 ECU lead.
The Pirates added three runs in the ninth on a 2-run double to the left-center gap by Starling, who subsequently came home on a wild pitch.
Jenkins-Cowart was 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs and an RBI as ECU outhit the Flames, 8-7.
ECU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second as Justin Wilcoxen had a single that scored Ryley Johnson and Liberty committed a throwing error that allowed Jenkins-Cowart to come in.
Jaden Winter (1-1) got the win in relief as the Pirates used five pitchers. Danny Beal picked up his second save.
The Pirates visit UNC-Wilmington (9-7) on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start.
