GREENVILLE — Josh Grosz gave the East Carolina bullpen a rare day off as the No. 10 Pirates completed a 3-game sweep of George Mason with a 5-0 win at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Sunday.
With home run support from Joey Berini and Josh Moylan, Grosz (4-0) turned in ECU’s first complete game shutout since Gavin Williams went seven innings in a 12-0 win over Memphis in the American Athletic Conference tournament on May 28, 2021, in Clearwater, FL.
Sunday’s contest was called after the Patriots (11-12) batted in the eighth — due to inclement weather.
Grosz, a junior right-hander from Virginia Beach, scattered five hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
The Pirates (19-5) got the only run they would need on Berini’s blast to The Jungle beyond left field in the second.
In the fourth, Justin Wilcoxen had a single that brought in Jacob Starling and Wilcoxen came home on a ground out by Alec Makarewicz that put ECU ahead, 3-0.
Ryley Johnson plated Wilcoxen on a fielder’s choice in the sixth and Moylan’s clout on a 2-2 count carried the center field fence in the seventh.
ECU had an 11-5 lead in hits as Starling, Wilcoxen, Berini and Carter Cunningham had two each.
The Pirates will take a 12-game home winning streak into a matchup with UNC-Wilmington (15-9) on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
