GREENVILLE — Ryan McCrystal and Alec Makarewicz hit home runs for East Carolina in a series-clinching 8-1 win over George Mason before the eighth-largest crowd in Clark-LeClair Stadium history.
Carter Spivey (2-1) went five innings for the win with 5,542 looking on.
No. 10 ECU (18-5) goes for a sweep of the 3-game series with the Patriots (11-11) on Sunday with an adjusted start time of 11 a.m. due to the threat of inclement weather later in the day.
McCrystal homered to right field for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Makarewicz put the Pirates ahead to stay at 2-1 with his solo shot to right in the fifth.
ECU added two runs in each of its last three turns at the plate.
A wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk pushed the advantage to 4-1 in the sixth.
Justin Wilcoxen had an RBI double and Ryley Johnson added a run-scoring single in the seventh.
Lane Hoover and Wilcoxen drove in runs in the eighth.
Spivey allowed five hits and one earned run with two walks and three strikeouts. Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman came in after the first two batters reached base in the sixth and tossed three perfect innings with a pair of whiffs.
Landon Ginn kept the visitors in check in the ninth.
Jacob Starling and Hoover had two hits each as ECU outhit George Mason, 10-6.
