ORLANDO — Alec Makarewicz hit a grand slam to complete the scoring in an 8-run fifth inning as East Carolina completed a 3-game American Athletic Conference sweep of host Central Florida on Saturday.
ECU improved to 22-15 overall and 7-2 in league play going into a nonconference game at home with UNC-Wilmington on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Zach Agnos, who went 3-for-5, singled to start the big frame and Lane Hoover was hit by a pitch. Agnos went to third on a wild pitch and Josh Moylan walked to load the bases before Cam Clonch put the Pirates ahead to stay with a 2-run double down the right field line.
Jacob Jenkins-Cowart had a single to left that brought in Moylan and Clonch.
Jacob Starling had a single to right and Bryson Worrell bunted for a hit before Makarewicz connected with a 1-1 pitch to clear the bases.
The Knights (21-15, 5-4) avoided a shutout on a solo homer in the sixth by Noah Orlando.
Jake Hunter (1-1) started and went three innings for the win. Josh Grosz pitched the next two and two-thirds. Trey Yesavage tossed two and one-third innings before Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman got the last three outs.
Yesavage had four of ECU’s eight strikeouts.
The Pirates outhit the hosts, 12-6, with Jenkins-Cowart, Starling, Worrell and Makarewicz getting two each.
