GREENVILLE — Four N.C. State pitchers combined for a 3-hit shutout as the Wolfpack took a 2-0 win at East Carolina on Tuesday.

The loss put the Pirates at 14-12 going into the start of American Athletic Conference play at Cincinnati on Friday at 5 p.m. The Bearcats are 9-13 going into a home game Wednesday night against Xavier.

State (16-8), ranked No. 22 in Collegiate Baseball’s March 28 poll, sent Garrett Payne, Canaan Silver, Baker Nelson and Chris Villaman to the mound at Clark-LeClair Stadium before a crowd of 4,813

Payne (3-0) started and went two and two-thirds innings for the win. Villaman got his fourth save.

A sacrifice bunt by J.T. Jarrett scored Dominic Pilolli to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the second.

Jarrett, the son of Notre Dame coach and former ECU assistant Link Jarrett, drove in NCSU’s second run with a single to left center in the fourth.

Left-hander C.J. Mayhue (2-1) started for the Pirates and was charged with the loss.
