GREENVILLE — Virginia Commonwealth scored five runs in the last three innings for a 5-2 win at East Carolina on Sunday.

The Pirates (14-11) were in position to sweep the Rams (12-10) with a 2-0 lead through six innings on back-to-back solo home runs by Carter Cunningham and Bryson Worrell in the third.

VCU got one run back in the seventh as Connor Hujsak scored on a sacrifice bunt by Casey Gibbs.

The Rams took the lead in the eighth as Tyler Locklear had an RBI double, Logan Amiss had a run-scoring single and Cooper Benzin had an RBI single.

VCU scored on a passed ball for a 5-2 lead in the ninth.

ECU loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth before a line-out turned into a game-ending double play.

Garrett Saylor (2-3), the third of five Pirate pitchers, was charged with the loss. Josh Grosz started and went six-plus innings for ECU. Grosz allowed three hits and one earned run with two walks and four strikeouts.

The outcome ended a 4-game winning streak for the Pirates, who host N.C. State (15-8) on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
