GREENVILLE — East Carolina took control early and swept Appalachian State in the Keith LeClair Classic with a 10-2 win on Sunday.
Thomas Francisco singled up the middle to score Connor Norby for a 1-0 ECU lead in the bottom of the first and the Pirates, ranked No. 17 by Division I baseball, led the rest of the way.
Norby’s infield single in the second brought in Josh Moylan and ECU (9-2) went ahead 3-0 when Bryson Worrell came home when a pickoff attempt failed to get Norby.
Seth Caddell hit a 3-run homer down the left field line for a 6-0 advantage in the third.
Caddell had a 2-run single down the right field line in the sixth.
A 2-run seventh for the Pirates included an RBI double by Norby and a ground out by Zach Agnos that scored Ryder Giles.
Kendall McGowan had an RBI single in the fourth and homered for the Mountaineers (6-5) in the seventh.
Carson Whisenhunt (2-0) started and went five innings for the win. He allowed two hits, one earned run and walked two while striking out six.
ECU outhit the visitors, 11-3. Norby, Francisco, Alec Makarewicz, Caddell and Giles had two hits each. Ben Newton had a double.
Coach Cliff Godwin cited an improved approach at the plate that produced more walks than strikeouts, 8-7.
The Pirates play Duke (6-5) at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
