GREENVILLE — Catcher Seth Caddell and reliever Nick Logusch provided highlights as East Carolina won the opening game of the 2021 Keith LeClair Classic, 13-2, over Appalachian State on Friday.
Caddell had a 2-run homer in the fifth inning and finished with three RBIs. Logusch struck out all six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings.
ECU improved to 7-2 going into the second of a 3-game set with the Mountaineers (6-3) on Saturday at 2 p.m. Only two teams are involved in the adjusted format of this year’s LeClair event.
Appalachian took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by Luke Drumheller. The Pirates tied the score on an RBI double by Alec Makarewicz and scored the go-ahead run on a balk. ECU completed a 3-run third with an RBI groundout by Caddell.
Unearned runs in the sixth and seventh pushed ECU’s lead to 7-2. A 6-run eighth inning included a 2-run double by Ben Newton. Collecting RBI singles were Connor Norby, Thomas Francisco, Makarewicz and Garrett Chandler.
Carter Spivey (1-0) was credited with the win in relief after coming in for starter Tyler Smith in the fourth.
Pirates coach Cliff Godwin cited an improved approach at the plate that resulted in nine walks.
