GREENVILLE — Andrea Dalatri of Old Dominion hit a 3-run homer to left in the top of the 12th inning and an East Carolina comeback fell short in the bottom of the frame as the Monarchs took a 6-5 win at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Wednesday.
The outcome left each club at 6-2.
ODU led 2-0 on solo homers by Kyle Battle in the first and Carter Trice in the fourth.
The Pirates went ahead 3-2 in the seventh after a leadoff double by Zach Agnos. Alec Makarewicz reached on a single to the pitcher to put runners at the corners. Agnos scored as the Monarchs turned a double play before Connor Norby hit a 2-run homer to left.
“That gave us momentum, but we didn’t close it out,” said ECU coach Cliff Godwin.
Kenny Levari’s sacrifice bunt with the bases loaded tied the score at 3 in the top of the ninth.
Thomas Francisco and Agnos had RBI singles for the Pirates in the 12th before a fly to center closed the nonconference contest with the potential tying run aboard.
Agnos (0-1) was charged with the loss in the matchup which spanned four hours, 42-minutes. Jacob Gomez (1-0) got the win and Noah Dean picked up his first save.
East Carolina hosts Appalachian State on Friday at 4 p.m. to start a 3-game series that will comprise the adjusted format of this year’s Keith LeClair Classic.
