STATESBORO, GA — Georgia Southern brought the potential winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning before sixth-year senior Cam Colmore earned a save for East Carolina with two strikeouts for a 6-4 win on Friday night.

Four runs in the fourth inning keyed the Pirates (5-0) offensively in their first road game of 2021.

ECU’s big frame started with a leadoff single by Connor Norby on the first pitch. Zach Agnos followed with a base hit through the left side. Freshman Josh Moylan had an RBI single through the left side to tie the score at 2. The Pirates went ahead to stay on a sacrifice bunt by Ryder Giles that brought in Agnos.

A ground out to short by Bryson Worrell scored Moylan and ECU led 5-2 after Lane Hoover reached on an error that allowed an unearned run.

The Pirates had taken a 1-0 lead in the third after Seth Caddell’s sacrifice fly followed consecutive singles by Alec Makarewicz, Worrell and Hoover.

The hosts went ahead on a 2-run homer by Mason McWhorter in the third.

After the Eagles had pulled within 5-4 on runs in the fifth and seventh, winning pitcher Matt Bridges had an RBI single in the eighth.

Bridges was awarded the decision after going two and one-third innings in relief, pitching into the eighth inning. Tyler Smith started and went four innings with five strikeouts. Colmore issued a pair of walks in the ninth but recorded three whiffs.

ECU had a 12-7 lead in hits as Hoover went 3-for-5 and Moylan was 2-for-3. Moylan and Giles had doubles.

Pirate left-hander Jake Kuchmaner is scheduled to start Saturday’s 2 p.m. contest, the second in a 3-game series.
