→ TACKLE →

  1. Willie Smith (RS-SR): Smith is a beast at the left tackle spot and according to OC Lincoln Riley, he is the prototype for a lineman for the new offense. He has started 14-straight games and will be among Conference USA's best tackles.
  2. Steven Baker (RS-So): Baker picked up a ton of experience, seeing action in 14 games in 2009 at tackle. He has mammoth size at 6-8, 316, but he may need to adapt to the new offense. He came out of spring, surprisingly, at No. 2 on the depth chart behind a redshirt freshman. Still, his experience and talent support the likelihood that he will get a bunch of playing time in 2010.
  3. Josh Clark (RS-SO): Clark had a fantastic spring and earned himself the primary backup behind Smith. Clark will see plenty of playing time in 2010 after seeing the field in just two games in 2009. He has the physical tools, but needs more game action.
  4. Grant Harner (RS-FR): In one of the surprises of the spring, Harner earned the top spot at right tackle ahead of Baker. Harner, an agile 6-6, 316 pounder, impressed with his footwork and has a chance to be a special lineman. That said, he has no game experience, so the battle between him and the more experienced Baker will be a one to watch.

Position Analysis – The Pirates boast one of the league’s top talents at left tackle and a player with no experience at the right. Baker is talented but for some reason fell down the depth chart in the spring. The other tackles are unproven though talented. For the Pirates to run the new offense to its capabilities, one of the young guys needs to elevate his game. Bets are on Baker, but Harner has been surprising. Overall the unit is solid, but not spectacular — yet.
