- Will Towery (RS-JR): Towery was having a
good spring en route to showing that he could indeed be an adequate
successor to the position dominated by stud center Sean Allen, who
graduated. But an injury cut short Towery’s spring camp. From what he
was able to show, it sounds as if he has a pretty good handle on the
position, but expecting him to be another Allen is not a fair comparison
as Allen was a rare talent. Hopefully, Towery will heal up by fall
because he is desperately needed to help fill the biggest gap in an
otherwise solid offensive line.
- Daulton Faulds (RS-SO): Like Towery, Faulds
missed most of the spring with an injury sustained in camp. Like Towery,
Faulds was showing some very good things when competing. And like Towery, Faulds now will have to heal up and hopefully pick up where he
left off to give the Pirates a viable backup.
Position Analysis – On a talented
offensive line, the one big question mark is the center position. Spring
camp didn’t make anyone feel any better as the two candidates to replace
All-Conference USA center Sean Allen both failed to finish camp, succumbing to
injuries midway through. This is a position the Pirates must shore up or they
will be in some serious trouble with a new QB under center. Towery has the
size and talent as a converted tight end, but now that health is an issue,
the position at best is on shaky grounds.
