- Corey Dowless (SR): Dowless is simply a
stud at one of the guards. He has started 28-straight games and heads
into his senior campaign as one of Conference USA’s top linemen. He is a leader
and a brutal blocker. Dowless gives the Pirates reliability at the left
guard position but can easily switch over to the right where he has
played as well.
- D.J. Scott (RS-SR): Scott has started 24 of
his last 27 games, including 14 straight, and provides East Carolina a
staunch mirror to Dowless on the other side of the center. Between Scott
and Dowless, the Pirates boast one of the most experienced and talented
pair of guards in the country, let alone C-USA. Like Dowless, Scott is
tenacious, strong, and a punishing blocker.
- Will Simmons (RS-FR): A technically-sound, very strong
and athletic lineman, Simmons has drawn praise as a scout
teamer and in the spring camp as a guy who deserves to get PT on the
field. He is physically imposing at 6-5, 280 pounds, but he lacks game
experience. He will get a lot of experience this season, but it remains
to be seen if he can fill in should Scott or Dowless go down to
injuries.
- Jordan Davis (RS-FR): Like Simmons, Davis
is a physically strong player who lacks game experience. He had a very
good spring and will have his chance this fall to gain experience behind
the two veterans.
Position Analysis
– Ideally, the Pirates would have one more experienced backup heading into
the 2010 season. Two redshirt freshmen are the only backups to the starters.
The good news is that the starters — Scott and Dowless — are both cagey
veterans with 52 starts between them over the past two seasons. They have
both proven to be extremely durable in their careers and if they stay that
way, the Pirates will have as good a set of guards as any team in the
country. The only caveat is whether or not Dowless and Scott can adjust to a
pass protection scheme rather than a punishing, run-oriented scheme. They
appeared to make the transition well in the spring, but only time will tell
if they can be stars within this system.
