Thirteen
C-USA alums in big leagues
A total of 13 players from Conference
USA schools appeared on the opening day rosters of Major League Baseball
teams as the American and National leagues began regular season play this
week.
Seven of C-USA's nine baseball schools
are represented in the big leagues, with players appearing on 12 different
teams. Seven of the 13 players are pitchers, while three are outfielders.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are the only
major league team with two C-USA players on its opening day roster, as
former East Carolina star Chad Tracy starts at third base, while ex-Houston
star Chris Snyder will see time at catcher.
Rice has the most major league players
with four, followed by cross-town rival Houston with three. Included among
the Owls pro standouts are Astros first baseman Lance Berkman, Dodgers
outfielder Jose Cruz, Jr. and Bubba Crosby of the Yankees. Padres veteran
starting pitcher Woody Williams and Twins reliever Jess Crain join Snyder
among UH's current major leaguers.
Memphis has a pair of opening day
players, including Marlins starting second baseman Dan Uggla and reliever
Cliff Politte of the defending World Champion Chicago White Sox. UCF is
represented by Mike Maroth, a regular in the Detroit Tigers rotation, while
former Southern Miss sidewinder Chad Bradford begins his first season in the
New York Mets bullpen. UAB's Chris Hammond is the veteran of the group, as
he returns this season to the Cincinnati Reds, the same club that the
lefthander made his major league debut with in 1990.
UAB interviews Davis
The Birmingham News reported Tuesday
that UAB interim athletics director Richard Margison planned to interview
former Indiana basketball coach Mike Davis for the Blazers' head coaching
position.
Davis, 45, is believed to be the
front-runner. Margison was also expected to interview Florida associate head
coach Anthony Grant at some point, according to sources familiar with the
search. The Blazers' vacancy opened when Mike Anderson left for Missouri on
March 26.
Rondo departs
Kentucky
The Louisville Courier-Journal has
reported that Rajon Rondo has played his last basketball game for the
University of Kentucky.
The 6-foot-1 sophomore guard from
Louisville announced on Tuesday afternoon that he will hire an agent and
enter the National Basketball Association draft. By hiring an agent, Rondo
forgoes the opportunity to “test the waters” and leave open the possibility
of returning to college.
“Some people say I should test the
waters,” Rondo said, "but I feel confident” (of going high in the draft).
Rondo said he had talked with
knowledgeable NBA sources who expect him to be drafted “anywhere between the
lottery and late first round.” The draft will be held June 28 in New York.
