ECU golfer
shares C-USA honor
East Carolina's Lene Krog was named
Conference USA women's co-golfer of the week on Wednesday afternoon by
league officials for the week ending March 28. This marks the second time
she has received the honor, having earlier been awarded the accolade on
Sept. 21.
The freshman from Leir, Norway, shared
the honor with Christina Wentworth of UAB. Krog placed fourth at the Liz
Murphey Collegiate Classic on the strength of a 71 in the final round, while
Wentworth earned medalist honors at the UC Spring Invitational.
UAB's
Johnson to face Globetrotters
UAB senior guard Squeaky Johnson has
been selected to participate in the 2006 NABC College All-Star game Friday
night at Conseco Fieldhouse as part of the Final Four festivities. It marks
the first such selection for a UAB player.
"Having only scored seven or eight
points per game for my career, it goes to show you that you don't have to be
a scorer to be recognized as one of the best players in the country,"
Johnson said. "It also shows you that defense and leadership are also
qualities that make players standout. I'm glad I've been selected,
especially considering I did it a little different way than some other
players."
Johnson and the college all-star team
will take on the Harlem Globetrotters at 8 p.m. tonight at Conseco
Fieldhouse.
Johnson is a finalist for the 2006 Bob
Cousy Award for the nation's top collegiate point guard. That award will be
announced in Indianapolis on Monday.
Rockne to be remembered across the globe
Today marks the 75th anniversary of the
death of former Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne in a plane crash in
Bazaar, Kan., and the anniversary will be marked — from Kansas to the Notre
Dame campus to Norway — in a handful of ways, past, present and future:
-
Near Bazaar, KS, where Rockne's
plane went down, the Wichita (KS) Rockne Memorial Club will host a
special memorial service at 10:00 a.m. CST, Friday, at the crash site.
-
Family members of the eight men who
were killed in the crash will be on hand. Students, alumni, staff,
friends, family and fans of Notre Dame and Rockne are invited to attend.
-
In Voss, Norway, Rockne's
birthplace, a statue of Rockne will be dedicated Friday at the exact
time Rockne's plane crashed into the Kansas hillside 75 years earlier.
The statue, sculpted by 1962 Notre Dame graduate Jerry McKenna, is
identical to the one that was dedicated in March 2005 in front of the
College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend.
-
On the Notre Dame campus, there
will be multiple showings Friday of a 52-minute video documentary on
Rockne titled, "Knute Rockne and His Fighting Irish" to recognize the
anniversary of the Hall of Fame coach's passing. The video originally
was shown on the PBS show "The American Experience."
