Stokes' first squad opening act for Homecoming

The athletic competition on East Carolina's Homecoming Day will commence on the basketball court instead of the football field.

ECU coach Ricky Stokes' hoops team will take to the hardwood in Minges Coliseum's Williams Arena at 11 a.m. Saturday and will tip off the annual Purple-Gold intra-squad scrimmage 45 minutes later, the school's athletic department announced Monday.

The day's main event, the Pirate football team's Conference USA game in adjacent Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium with Central Florida, will kick off at 2 p.m.

Minges Coliseum's gates will open at 10:30 a.m., providing an opportunity for fans to watch a brief intra-squad game featuring the Lady Pirates before the men take the court.

The basketball action will be free of charge to the public.

Stokes, who succeeded Bill Herrion as head coach after last season, inherited 8 lettermen, including three starters. Senior frontcourt player Corey Rouse, Conference USA's leading rebounder in 2004-05, is the team's most prominent returning player.

The Pirates will unofficially open their season when they host North Carolina Central in an exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.

ECU's regular season will begin with three straight home games: Friday, Nov. 18, vs. North Carolina A&T, 7 p.m.; Tuesday, Nov, 22, vs. Gardner-Webb, 7 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 26, vs. Wofford, 7 p.m.
