Renewal of USM-NCSU series set for television
HATTIESBURG — Southern Mississippi's
football game at North Carolina State on Saturday will be shown nationally
on ESPNU at noon ET. The fledgling ESPN offshoot network is carried on
satellite by DirectTV (Channel 609) and Dish Network (Channel 148).
This will be the ninth meeting between
the two schools, with the series tied at four wins apiece.
Saturday’s game marks the first meeting
between the two teams at Carter-Finley Stadium. The most recent match-up
resulted in a Wolfpack win in the 1990 All-American Bowl, which was USM head
coach Jeff Bower’s debut.
Southern Miss and N.C. State played
each season from 1958-63 and again in 1966. Southern Miss won the first two
meetings, both in Mobile, AL, 26-14 in 1958 and 19-14 in 1959.
The Wolfpack won 20-13 in Hattiesburg
in 1960 and followed that up with a 7-6 victory in 1961 in Mobile. The
Golden Eagles defeated N.C. State 30-0 in Mobile in 1962 and the Wolfpack
claimed a 14-0 win in Hattiesburg in 1963.
A game in 1966 between the teams, which
was played in Norfolk, VA, was won by Southern Miss 7-6.
USM enters the game with a 4-2 record,
3-1 in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles are on a two-game winning streak
following a 37-28 victory last Friday at UAB.
N.C. State is 2-4 overall, 1-4 record
in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Wolfpack is coming off two consecutive
losses, 31-10 to Clemson and 27-19 to Wake Forest.

Southern Miss release.
