Three weeks ago, East Carolina was tied for 5th place with Louisville in the Conference USA baseball race, behind then co-leaders Southern Mississippi, South Florida and Tulane.

After holding off the Cardinals for the second day in a row, the steamrolling Pirates now find themselves firmly atop the standings.

ECU, which entered the weekend tied with USM for the league lead, defeated U of L 9-7 Saturday to extend its winning streak to 15 games, while the Golden Eagles were embarrassed by Tulane 17-5.

The results mirrored Friday's weekend openers, when the Pirates subdued Louisville 6-4 and Southern Miss was humbled by the Green Wave 17-1.

East Carolina, ranked ninth by Baseball America, is 14-3 in the conference. No. 11 Southern Miss and 18th-ranked Tulane are tied for second at 12-5.

Louisville fell to 8-9 in the league with its loss to the Pirates.

USF, the other team that was in the regular season title mix three weeks ago, was swept by the Pirates in a three-game series the second weekend of April and has yet to regain its bearings.

ECU will close its series with the Cardinals at Harrington Field today at noon [Pirate Radio 1250 Live Stream], while USM and Tulane are wrapping up their three-game set in New Orleans.

Losman, Rivers plucked in draft's first round

For the second time in three years, a Tulane quarterback has been chosen in the first round of the National Football League Draft. J.P. Losman was selected by the Buffalo Bills with the 22nd overall selection on Saturday.

The 6-2, 224-pound Losman will likely serve as a backup to Drew Bledsoe in 2004 after the team lost Alex Van Pelt, who retired in the offseason.

Losman may be the most athletically gifted quarterback in the draft. He completed 59.5 percent of his passes (251-of-422) for 3,077 yards and 33 touchdowns with 14 interceptions this past season.

Losman has a quick release and excellent arm strength but didn't have an extended opportunity to display his full repertoire of talents until last season. In 2000-01, he was a backup at Tulane to Patrick Ramsey, a 2002 first round pick of the Washington Redskins.

No other Conference USA players were picked in the first three rounds of the draft, but a Carolinas team boasted the No. 4 pick. N.C. State quarterback Philip Rivers was selected by the New York Giants, who swapped him along with three draft picks to the San Diego Chargers for the draft's top pick, Ole Miss quarterback Eli Manning.
