HONOLULU The date of the 2004 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl
has been changed from Christmas Day to Christmas Eve, officials said last
week.
"With the NFL taking a two-game slot on Christmas Day, it became necessary
for us to move the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl to Christmas Eve," bowl executive
director Jim Donovan said.
The kickoff for this year's game at Aloha Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m. (7
p.m. EST) and will be telecast live by ESPN.
The bowl is owned and operated by ESPN Regional Television, the marketing
arm of the cable sports network, in partnership with the University of
Hawaii, the Western Athletic Conference and Conference USA.
The first two bowl games were played on Christmas Day. Tulane defeated
Hawaii 36-28 in the inaugural game in 2002, and Hawaii defeated Houston
54-48 in triple overtime last year.
Supercharged Pirates sail into 1st place tie
Southern Mississippi, which had been entrenched
alone for the last week at the top of the Conference USA baseball standings,
suddenly has some company.
While the Golden Eagles were being surprised by
Memphis Sunday in the finale of the teams' weekend series,
East Carolina was shelling host Cincinnati 13-7
to run its winning streak to 12 games and polish off a three-game sweep of
the Bearcats that boosted the Pirates into a first-place tie.
The Pirates scored 62 runs in their series with
Cincy, including a
C-USA record number of runs scored
in a 32-14 win on Saturday.
Southern Miss won the first two games of its home
series with Memphis before the Tigers pulled off Sunday's 5-4 upset.
In other conference pairings over the weekend:
UAB snapped a nine-game losing streak by winning
back-to-back games against No. 10 Tulane, including Sunday's 6-5 win on a
walk-off home run by Eugene Rodriguez.
Both Texas teams won a pair of games on the road.
Texas Christian dropped Friday night's opener at South Florida, but won the
final two games over the Bulls, while Houston won twice at Saint Louis.
Charlotte won its first road series of the season,
winning two of three at Louisville.
