Cincinnati's Tony Bobbitt won the MVP award and Memphis's Antonio Burks raised scouts' eyebrows with his all-around game as the pair led Norfolk Naval Shipyard past Beach Barton Fort for the championship of the Portsmouth Invitational.

Bobbitt scored 19 points in the title game, while Burks added 16 points and 10 assists to put the finishing touches on last week's four-day affair staged for the benefit of NBA executives.

Their production in the title game put an exclamation point on the performances of Bobbitt and Burks in an event that was, in effect, a platform for demonstrating skills before pro scouts. Bobbitt averaged 17.0 points and 4.3 assists during the competition, while Burks averaged 11.7 points and 4.7 assists.

Eight Conference USA players were invited to participate in the 52nd Portsmouth Invitational, an annual occasion which this year invited 64 college seniors to give them their first exposure to approximately 200 NBA representatives prior to the league’s annual pre-draft camp in Chicago in May.

In addition to Bobbitt and Burks, Charlotte’s Demon Brown, DePaul's Andre Brown and Delonte Holland, Louisville’s Luke Whitehead, Marquette’s Scott Merritt and UAB’s Mo Finley were invited to the tournament.

Little man Nelson scores fitting award

SPRINGFIELD, MA — Jameer Nelson won another postseason award Tuesday when the Saint Joseph's guard was honored as the game's best college player under 6 feet by the Basketball Hall of Fame.

The 5-foot-11 Nelson is the first consensus Division I player of the year to receive the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award, named for the daughter-in-law of basketball inventor James Naismith.

Nelson already was chosen as the player of the year by The Associated Press, The Sporting News, and the U.S. Basketball Writers. He also received the John Wooden Award, the Naismith Award, and was the first recipient of the Bob Cousy Award as the country's top college point guard.

Nelson averaged 20.6 points, 5.3 assists and 2.9 steals for the Hawks (30-2) this season. For his career, he had 2,094 points to become the school's top scorer. He also led in assists (713) and steals (256).
