Ripley's Believe It Or Not, take notice.
While the bats were booming at breakneck pace in
East Carolina's 32-14 jaunt at
Cincinnati on Saturday, the bases were virtually barren of runners in a
Division III doubleheader in Farmingdale, NY.
In a
day of non-stop celebration for hitters
involving ECU and Conference USA opponent Cincinnati, records shattered like
broken glass as the No. 15 Pirates extended their winning streak to 11
games. During the stretch, they have buried their opponents under an
avalanche of 141 runs while giving up 65.
Meanwhile, in the Empire State, Jason Guichard and
Bill Jansen were throwing back-to-back no-hitters for host Farmingdale, but
the Rams still had to settle for a split with Manhattanville in a Skyline
Conference twinbill.
Guichard struck out five and walked two in seven
innings in Farmingdale's 1-0 victory in the opener, and Jansen had 12
strikeouts and five walks in a 10-inning 1-0 loss in the second game.
Penders lures Midlands juco duo to Houston
University of Houston head basketball coach Tom
Penders announced that Brian Latham of Midland College has signed a letter
of intent to play for the Cougars in 2004-05.
Latham is the second player from Midland College to
sign with Houston since Penders was named head coach on March 23, 2004. He
re-joins his current teammate, Englebert Cherrington.
"Brian is a leader who can play the point or
two-guard position," Penders said. "He is extremely athletic and loves to
play defense. He will fit right into our system and be very productive from
the get go."
A native of Memphis, TN, Latham is a 6-1 sophomore
guard who averaged 8.1 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. He ranked fourth
among Western Junior College Athletic Conference leaders in assists with a
4.4 average and steals with 2.3 per game.
As a freshman, Latham earned Honorable Mention
All-Conference honors after averaging 6.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists,
1.5 steals and ranked second on the team in blocked shots with 13.
He played at East High School in Memphis and once
recorded a "triple double" with 44 points, 18 rebounds and 14 steals in a
game.
Latham and Cherrington come to Houston after helping
lead Midland to a 30-7 overall record and a third place finish at the NJCAA
National Tournament in 2003-04.
The Chaparrals also won the Western Junior College
Athletic Conference with a 13-1 mark and the NJCAA Region V Tournament
Championship.
Vandy-style overhaul in store for Colorado?
BOULDER — The former college president hired to
examine how the troubled University of Colorado athletics department works
said he wonders if a serious overhaul of the program is the answer.
John DiBiaggio, a temporary liaison between the CU
president's office and the athletics department, told the Rocky Mountain
News last week that Boulder might benefit from a variation of Vanderbilt
University's disbanding of its sports program.
Vanderbilt President Gordon Gee, a former CU
president, dismantled the athletics department in 2003 and incorporated the
Division 1 sports teams into the club-sports programs.
"CU could try, you know, some variation of it. It
might change its governing structure in a way that would assure that there
was adequate accountability and also adequate input of the academic side of
the house into collegiate athletics," DiBiaggio said.
He is evaluating how the athletics department
operates while investigations continue into allegations that the football
program uses sex and alcohol to lure top recruits. DiBiaggio, a former
president of Tufts, Michigan State and Connecticut universities, reports
directly to CU President Elizabeth Hoffman and Chancellor Richard Byyny.
DiBiaggio acknowledged the Vanderbilt model might
not work at CU, which has been more competitive in sports. But some
modification might, he said.
At a minimum, there needs to be better dialogue
between the academic and athletic parts of the university, DiBiaggio said.
"The communication between the two is limited at best," he said.
DiBiaggio said it's difficult to determine the truth
of the accusation that the football program entices recruits with sex and
alcohol.
"I mean, I don't have any subpoena power," he said.
"I can't force anyone to tell me. My suspicion is, if there is a bit of
smoke, there could be a bit of fire, right?"
Any notion the program can be excused because it's
occurring elsewhere, or that it's necessary to remain competitive with other
schools is unacceptable, DiBiaggio said.
Although he was hired March 5 to work up to four
months, DiBiaggio wants to finish his work at CU by the end of April or the
soon after.
The independent panel formed by the Board of Regents
to investigate the recruiting scandal must complete its work by May 14.
The state attorney general is conducting a separate
investigation.
At least eight women since 1997 have accused players
and recruits of rape, but no charges have been filed. The university has
been sued in federal court by three of the women, who say it fostered a
hostile environment in violation of federal law guaranteeing equal access to
education.
School officials have denied suggestions that they
condone sexual misconduct and drinking by athletes.
