INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA recertified 28 bowl games
Thursday and will consider applications from three more groups that could be
added in the 2005-06 season.
Two bowl games from last season will have new names.
The Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl will now be called the Emerald Bowl,
while the Humanitarian Bowl has been renamed the MPC Computers Bowl.
The NCAA now requires bowl games to maintain an
average attendance of 25,000 or 70 percent of the seating capacity to retain
its certification.
Four bowl games — the Las Vegas, New Orleans,
Emerald and Silicon Valley Bowls — were certified with concern expressed by
the subcommittee regarding the required attendance.
Two games — the EV1.net Houston Bowl and the Silicon
Valley Football Classic — were certified with conditions. Those bowl
officials must submit letters of credit by Sept. 1 because they missed the
deadline for the 2003-04 bowl season.
The Football Certification Subcommittee also heard
presentations from representatives of Seattle, Denver and South Florida. Any
bowls submitting applications for play in 2005-06 will receive notification
for possible certification at next year's meeting of the subcommittee.
The other bowls that were recertified for this year
were: AutoZone Liberty, Capital One, Chick-Fil-A Peach, Continental Tire,
Fed Ex Orange, Gaylord Hotels Music City, GMAC, Independence, Insight,
MasterCard Alamo, Motor City, Nokia Sugar, Outback, Pacific Life Holiday,
PlainsCapital Fort Worth, Rose, SBC Cotton, Sheraton Hawaii, Tangerine,
Tostitos Fiesta, Toyota Gator and Vitalis Sun.

Pirates reshuffle May baseball
schedule
East Carolina's May 5 game against Duke at Kinston's
Grainger Stadium has been scratched and a pair of previously rained out
contest with UNC Wilmington have been rescheduled.
The Pirates will host the Seahawks on May 4 in what
will be this season's final game at Harrington Field before ECU closes out
