Miami Dolphins running back and former East Carolina star Leonard Henry was named the NFL Europe League Offensive Player of the Week for games played the first week of the season (April 3-4).

On Saturday, April 3, Henry gained a total of 174 yards and scored two touchdowns to help the Frankfurt Galaxy open the season with a 34-11 victory over the Amsterdam Admirals.

Henry, a native of Clinton, rushed for 114 yards on 19 carries, including scoring runs of eight and 24 yards. He added three receptions for 60 yards, including a 29-yard grab that led to a Galaxy touchdown.

Drexler glides into Basketball Hall of Fame

SAN ANTONIO — Nicknames have followed Clyde Drexler throughout his basketball career.

In college, he played for the electrifying "Phi Slama Jama" teams at the University of Houston. As a pro, he was Clyde "The Glide" for his speed, ball handling and swooping moves to the basket.

As an Olympian, he played on the first "Dream Team."

Now, he can add something a little more formal: Hall of Famer.

Drexler was one of six former players, coaches and team executives announced this week as the newest members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

Joining him are Lynette Woodard, an Olympic gold medalist and first female Harlem Globetrotter; coach Bill Sharman, already in the hall as a player; the late Maurice Stokes, the 1956 NBA rookie of the year; Jerry Colangelo, chairman of the Phoenix Suns; and Drazen Dalipagic, an international star for Yugoslavia.

They will be inducted Sept. 10 in Springfield.

Drexler, who in 1997 was selected one of the NBA's 50 greatest players, was humbled to be a new member of the hall.

"I grew up watching a lot of them and to be in the same class as they are is phenomenal," Drexler said. "It kind of validates your career as a basketball player. I think that I'm the luckiest man in the world."

In college, he played in two Final Fours. In his 15-year NBA career, Drexler led the Portland Trail Blazers to the NBA Finals in 1990 and '92, and won a championship with Houston in 1995.

He is one of three players in league history to accumulate 20,000 points, 6,000 rebounds and 6,000 assists.

Nicholls State ditching Rebel mascot

THIBODAUX, LA Nicholls State is dropping its mascot, a Confederate officer which some feel is an homage to the Old South and the slave era.

The school announced last week that it would erase images of the mascot on school buildings and property and get rid of the costumed figure at football and basketball games.

The school's teams have long gone by the "Colonels" moniker and the mascot is often referred to as Tillou, recalling the school's namesake, former Gov. Francis Tillou Nicholls, who was a Confederate general.

Still, university officials said Friday that the school never actually gave the mascot a name, and that the cartoon image was not originally conceived as a Civil War icon.
