Senior guard James Legan
made a three-pointer with five seconds left to cap a dramatic overtime
rally that lifted East Carolina to a Conference USA victory over Rice
Saturday night in Greenville.
Sophomore wing Jamar
Abrams sank a pair of free throws with 1:21 remaining in the extra frame
to ignite the 7-0 run that vaulted East Carolina from an 88-84 deficit
to the 91-88 win.
Sophomore guard Brock
Young hit a jumper with 31 seconds left to tie the score and set the
stage for Legan's game-winning heroics.
Legan scored 20 points,
freshman center Darrius Morrow added 19, and Young and senior guard Sam
Hinnant had 17 apiece to lead the Pirates. Young had a game-high 14
assists, tying a school record and setting a new school mark for assists
in a season with 189.
Senior guard Rodney Foster
scored a game-high 24 points, sophomore center Trey Stanton added 21,
junior guard Lawrence Ghoram had 13 and freshman guard Connor Frizzelle
contributed 12 for the Owls.
The Pirates led 40-38 at
the half and, after maintaining the upper hand for much of the second
half, appeared poised to win in regulation. But a three-pointer by
Foster with 12 seconds left pulled Rice even at 80-80 and forced the
overtime.
The Owls put on an
impressive shooting display, only to be out-done by the Pirates. Rice
was 33-65 from the field (50.8%) and 12-26 from three-point range
(46.2%), while East Carolina hit 29-54 field goal attempts (53.7%) and
connected on a sizzling 11-22 three-point tries (50%).
The Pirates' production
from the free throw line was a key factor in the game's outcome. East
Carolina converted 22-25 free throws (88%), resulting in a 12-point
swing in the final score. The Owls made only 10-15 from the charity
stripe (66.7%).
East Carolina will meet
Southern Mississippi for the second time this season Tuesday night in
Hattiesburg (8
pm ET). The Pirates
edged the Golden Eagles 82-79
on Feb. 4 in
Greenville.
Southern Miss (13-11, 3-7)
will be coming into the rematch off a 72-47 rout by No. 8 Memphis Saturday
afternoon. The Golden Eagles have lost five games in a row.
