GREENVILLE — East Carolina topped Charlotte, 5-1, on Saturday at Clark LeClair Stadium before a crowd of 5,998 to win the American Athletic Conference series.
The No. 9 Pirates (27-7, 8-3 AAC) go for a sweep of the 49ers (15-20, 4-7) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
ECU moved into a tie with Texas-San Antonio for first in the league standings with the Roadrunners’ loss to Memphis. USTA has the tiebreaker vs. ECU by virtue of a 2-1 series win against the Pirates.
Zach Root (5-0) pitched five innings Saturday for the win and Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman went the last four frames. Root yielded three hits, one run (earned) with five walks and four strikeouts. Lunsford-Shenkman allowed two hits with no walks and eight whiffs.
ECU scored three runs in the third inning and added two more in the sixth.
Jacob Jenkins-Cowart had a 2-run single in the third to bring in Ryley Johnson and Dixon Williams. Jenkins-Cowart came home on a hit by Bristol Carter.
Carter Cunningham and Jenkins-Cowart had RBI singles in the sixth.
ECU outhit the visitors, 10-5, with 10 singles. Johnson went 3-for-4. Jenkins Cowart and Carter had two hits each.
