BOCA RATON, FL — Trey Yesavage went seven scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts to lead No 12 East Carolina to a 4-1 American Athletic Conference win at Florida Atlantic on Friday night.
Jacob Jenkins-Cowart had a home run and three RBIs.
ECU (22-6, 5-2 AAC) scored in the top of the first and stayed on top the rest of the way. Ryley Johnson led off with a walk and stole second. He moved to third on a single to right by Carter Cunningham and came home on a sacrifice fly by Jenkins-Cowart.
Johnson walked in the third and Jenkins-Cowart hit a 2-run homer to right for a 3-0 lead.
Johnson scored his third run of the game in the eighth for a 4-0 Pirates advantage. Johnson singled and stole second. He scored on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Jenkins-Cowart.
Andrew McKenna had an RBI single for the Owls (17-10, 4-3) in the eighth.
Yesavage (6-1) allowed three hits and walked two.
Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman pitched the last two innings and picked up his third save. He yielded two hits, one run (earned) and walked one with three whiffs.
The second game of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m.
