GREENVILLE — East Carolina swept an American Athletic Conference doubleheader from Central Florida by scores of 17-7, in seven innings, and 11-5 on Thursday at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The Pirates, ranked No. 12 this week by D1Baseball, improved to 23-8 overall and 3-2 in the AAC going into the third game of the series, which is scheduled for Friday at noon.
ECU did not trail throughout the day, scoring four runs in the second inning of the first game and nine runs in the second inning in the second game.
Pirate starting pitchers Trey Yesavage and Carter Spivey used the run support to earn wins.
Yesavage (5-0) went five and two-thirds innings in the first game. He had a no-hitter until the Knights (17-14, 1-4) launched three straight home runs with two out in the sixth and Pirates coach Cliff Godwin called in Jordan Little from the bullpen. Willie Lumpkin pitched the seventh in the opener.
Josh Moylan had a 3-run homer for ECU in the fifth inning of the abbreviated contest. Alec Makarewicz was 4-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Lane Hoover had three hits and two RBIs. Cam Clonch had a hit and drove in a pair of runs. Jacob Jenkins-Cowart and Carter Cunningham each had two hits and an RBI. Joey Berini had a hit and an RBI.’
Spivey (3-1) went six innings. He allowed three hits and two earned runs while walking two and striking out six. Danny Beal pitched the last two and one-third innings.
Berini had a triple, a homer and two RBIs in the second game. Collecting a pair of RBIs apiece were Moylan, Luke Nowak and Makarewicz.
The Pirates are 19-2 at home this season.
