GREENVILLE — East Carolina defeated Maryland, 6-3, on Sunday at Clark-LeClair Stadium as the Pirates went 3-0 in the 22nd annual Keith LeClair Classic.
Indiana State topped Michigan, 6-5, in the first game Sunday as the Sycamores, Wolverines and Terps each finished 1-2 in the 3-day event.
The Pirates tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning as Alec Makarewicz scored on a bunt to the pitcher by Zach Agnos.
ECU (6-5) went ahead to stay with four runs in the third. Bryson Worrell had a 2-run homer and Makarewicz stroked an RBI double down the right-field line. ECU took a 5-1 lead on a sacrifice fly by Carter Cunningham to close the scoring in the third.
The Pirates added an unearned run in the fifth.
Danny Beal (1-0) got the win in relief and Ryder Giles pitched the last two and one-third innings for his first save.
Makarewicz went 3-for-4 as ECU had 10 hits.
Maxwell Costes had a solo homer for Maryland (9-2) in the fourth.
The Pirates visit Virginia Tech (9-1) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
