GREENVILLE — East Carolina began play in the 19th annual Keith LeClair Classic on Friday with a 5-4 win over Indiana State at Clark LeClair Stadium .
With the score tied at 3 in the bottom of the sixth, the Pirates pushed across a pair of runs on bunt singles by Ryder Giles and Zach Agnos.
“Our offensive execution was the best this season,” said ECU coach Cliff Godwin.
“We practice bunting every day,” Agnos said.
The Pirates (4-5) also tallied twice in the first on a run-scoring double by Jacob Jenkins-Cowart and a sacrifice fly by Alec Makarewicz.
ECU had an unearned run in the fourth.
Jake Kuchmaner, Carter Spivey, Garrett Saylor, C.J. Mayhue and Skylar Brooks pitched for the Pirates, combining for 13 strikeouts.
Mayhue (2-0) got the decision in relief and Brooks picked up his second save.
Jenkins-Cowart and Carter Cunningham each had two hits in the win.
Sean Ross and Randall Diaz each had two hits and an RBI for the Sycamores (5-3).
Michigan dealt No. 21 Maryland (8-1) its first loss of the season, 7-4, in the first game Friday. ECU plays the Wolverines (7-3) on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Maryland meets Indiana State at noon Saturday.
