CHAPEL HILL — East Carolina was shut out for the first time this season with a 2-0 loss to North Carolina at Boshamer Stadium on Saturday.

The Tar Heels (6-0) took a 2-0 lead in the series on a 2-run double by Angel Zarate to deep center in the fifth inning.

ECU held a 5-4 edge in hits and played errorless defense while UNC committed one miscue.

Jake Kuchmaner (0-1) went four and two-thirds innings. The runners were his responsibility when Zarate connected with a 2-1 pitch from C.J. Mayhue that brought in Reece Holbrook, who had walked, and Vance Honeycutt, who had singled through the left side.

Josh Grosz pitched the last three innings for the Pirates, allowing one hit and one walk with four strikeouts.

Carter Cunningham, Cam Clonch, Alec Makarewicz, Ryder Giles and Ben Newton had singles for the Pirates.

Max Carlson (1-0) got the win and Caden O’Brien picked up his second save.

The third game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 4 p.m. at Clark-LeClair Stadium in Greenville.
