A pair of schools not necessarily associated with the richest lore of college football history have figured out ways to get dates with Notre Dame.

The San Diego State Aztecs and Nevada Wolf Pack will eventually make the hallowed trek across the gaze of 'Touchdown Jesus' as a part of a complicated reshuffling of schedules by several teams to accommodate a desire by the Irish to be in top form for a game next season against Michigan.

Notre Dame launched the chain of events when it set about the task of tweaking its 2004 schedule to accommodate a Sept. 4 season opener at Brigham Young, giving the Fighting Irish a game under their belts before they play the Wolverines.

Notre Dame didn't want its Sept. 11 game against Michigan to be its opener, especially with the Wolverines having already played a game. Michigan opens the season against Miami of Ohio on Sept. 4.

"For this scenario, this is something we wanted to address," John Heisler, associate athletic director at Notre Dame, said Tuesday.

The Irish are coming off a 5-7 season and were beaten 38-0 a year ago by Michigan.

The list of opponents for Notre Dame doesn't change, just the order of games. The Irish had been scheduled to play at BYU on Oct. 30.

"Our motivation was just the rhythm of the schedule," Heisler said. "When you look at our schedule big picture, you don't have consecutive road games, you've got open dates before you play USC and Tennessee. It's a more attractive flow than if we hadn't made the move."

Notre Dame had been working on the switch for months, but it appeared dead in April because so many schools had to change their schedules. The plan was revived last month, though, with some help from ESPN, Heisler said.

"We thought we'd hit a dead end, then all of a sudden there was more of an ability to continue the conversation," Heisler said.

Among other schools changing their schedules were Southern California, Stanford, Nevada and San Diego State.

Heisler said Notre Dame has promised Nevada and San Diego State games at South Bend in return for their cooperation.

San Diego State's game against Notre Dame will be in 2008. The Aztecs will also get two other televised games in return for changing their football schedule to accommodate TV.

Banished Texas hurlers recalled for tourney

AUSTIN — Texas, the overall No. 1 seed for the NCAA baseball tournament, reinstated pitchers Justin Simmons and J. Brent Cox on Tuesday, a week after they were arrested on public intoxication charges during the Big 12 tournament.

They will be allowed to play in Friday's opening-round game against Youngstown State, coach Augie Garrido said in a statement.

The players were suspended on Thursday for a ``violation of team rules.''

They were arrested on May 25 at an Arlington shopping center. Each was released after posting $211 bond.

Simmons (9-3, 4.24 ERA), a left-handed starter, and Cox (five saves, 1.62 ERA), a right-handed reliever, were sent home from the tournament and missed two games.
