Southern Mississippi and Texas Christian emerged from the loser's bracket Saturday to claim their places in today's Conference USA Tournament championship game in Houston.

The Golden Eagles, who lost their Wednesday tourney opener 10-5 to Memphis, put together four straight victories — including a pair of Saturday wins over UAB — to advance to a Sunday afternoon battle for the title with the Horned Frogs.

TCU, which lost to Houston 9-5 on the first day of the tournament, extended its own run to four straight triumphs — capped off by back-to-back revenge wins over the Cougars on Saturday — to earn its spot in Sunday's winner-take-all game.

USM advanced to the championship game for the second straight season with its 9-7 win over UAB in the second match-up of the day between the teams. Jason Lowery hit a grand slam, Marc Maddox had a home run and three RBI's and Jarrett Hoffpauir hit his third homer of the day to ignite the Golden Eagles.

TCU extended its life until at least Sunday the hard way, when Kyle Dahlberg's singled up the middle in the bottom of the ninth to score Shelby Ford and topple tournament host Houston in Saturday night's final game. Austin Adams, who had only three home runs in the regular season, hit his fourth homer of the tournament in the game.

A pair of seventh inning rallies earlier in the day had set up the nighttime rematches.

Trailing 3-1, Austin Adams launched a towering grand slam that helped lift TCU to an 8-3 win over Houston. Ryan Weems starred on the mound for the Horned Frogs, throwing a complete-game.

In the day's first game, USM erased a 10-5 deficit with an 11-run seventh inning to defeat UAB, 16-10. Hoffpauir led the offensive fireworks with two home runs and six RBI's. Jason Lowery added a pair of hits and three RBI's.

Houston and UAB entered the final day of the double-elimination phase of the tournament without a loss.

According to a C-USA announcement, the championship game will be televised live in Eastern N.C. on WITN-TV 7 and in the Piedmont on UNC-Charlotte Cable TV, Channel 22. It scheduled to be carried on a tape-delay basis at 4 p.m. by WGSR-TV, Channel 39 in Greensboro, and at a time to be determined by Fox Sports Net South.

Southern Miss won last year's regular season and tournament titles.

Yale basketball player dies in auto accident

NEW HAVEN, CN — Yale center Joshua Hill was killed in a car accident in New Jersey, school officials said Friday.

The 22-year-old Hill died Thursday when his car crashed in Estelle Manor Township, N.J. Hill missed most of the 2002-03 season and all of last season with injuries but planned to play as a senior this fall.

"Josh Hill was the inspirational leader of the men's basketball team," coach James Jones said. "His energy and attitude were major factors in our run to an Ivy League championship during the 2001-02 season. He had a great respect and love for children of all ages and had a strong involvement during Yale's youth day events."

The Ivy League school was shaken by a similar tragedy 15 months ago when four Yale students, including two members of the baseball team, were killed in a crash on Interstate 95 in Fairfield.
