East Carolina and one of its stable of ace pitchers,
Greg Bunn, grabbed the biggest headlines of Conference USA's climactic
regular season weekend.
The right-handed Bunn kept normally hard-hitting
Southern Mississippi off balance for 8 innings as the Pirates shut out the
Golden Eagles 9-0 on Thursday to settle the C-USA regular season race in the
first game of the three-game series between the teams.
After winning two of three from USM, including a
punctuating 11-0 clampdown in Saturday's final matchup, ECU claimed the
championship by four games and will be the No. 1 seed at the
C-USA Tournament which begins
Wednesday in Houston.
The nationally 4th-ranked Pirates finished with a
25-5 record in conference play, establishing a new mark for league wins.
At 47-9 overall, ECU owns the best record in
division I baseball for the fourth week in a row.
For his sterling performance against Southern Miss,
Bunn was named C-USA Pitcher of the Week. Designated hitter Ryan McKinnon of
Louisville, ECU's opening round foe in the tournament, was selected Hitter
of the Week.
C-USA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
HITTER OF THE WEEK: Ryan McKinnon, Junior DH,
Louisville, Hamilton, Ontario
McKinnon helped the Cardinals to a sweep at USF and
a spot in the conference tournament by slugging two home runs and two
doubles, while driving in eight runs in three games. He posted a .933
slugging percentage and .438 on-base mark with 14 total bases. McKinnon's
grand slam was the difference in Thursday's 9-5 win. He went 3-for-5 with a
two-run home run, a walk and a double, plating three in Friday's 13-4
victory. McKinnon drove in a run with a bases-loaded single and then scored
the game-tying run in the Cards' eight-run rally in the ninth inning on
Saturday.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Greg Bunn, Junior, RHP, East
Carolina, Wake Forest, NC
Bunn threw eight shutout innings at Southern Miss,
holding the league's second-best hitting team to just five hits as East
Carolina clinched the regular season C-USA title with a 9-0 win. He struck
out six and walked three in raising his season record to 8-0. It was Bunn's
fourth combined shutout this season.
