Opening day of the Conference USA Baseball Tournament in Houston was one for the underdogs — with a notable exception.

No. 2 seed Tulane and 3rd seed Southern Mississippi, the teams considered most likely to block regular season champion East Carolina's path to the tournament title, both bit the dust early and hard.

Bucking the upset trend was the nationally 4th-ranked Pirates, who headed back to the hotel early after a 13-2 walloping of Louisville that was halted after seven innings by the mercy rule.

In a morning game, Jarrett Grube struck out 10 and Jordan Hart had five hits, including two home runs, as No. 5 seed Memphis astonished USM, 10-5.

On deck for the next upset was 7th seed UAB, which stunned Tulane for the third time this season, 10-4. Cole Helms was 3-for-4 with two RBI's and Eugene Rodriguez hit a three-run home run for the Blazers.

ECU would live up to its favorite's role, manhandling the Cardinals in the third game of the day. Ace pitcher Greg Bunn improved his record to 9-0 and Ryan Norwood and John Poppert were each 3-for-3 with four RBI's as the Pirates won their school-record 48th game of the season.

Day one was capped by a 9-5 victory by middle-seed Houston over middle-seed Texas Christian. Thanos Papavasiliou had a three-run home run and Cole Bruce had three hits for the Cougars.

Southern Miss and Tulane will play an elimination game at 10 a.m. on Thursday, while Louisville and Texas Christian will follow with a do-or-die match-up at 1:30 p.m.

The two upstarts, UAB and Memphis, will meet in the first game of the winner's bracket at 5 p.m., while ECU and Houston, the tourney host, will battle in the 8:30 p.m. nightcap.

Court rejects boosters' seat assignment suit

LAWRENCE, KA — Seat locations for University of Kansas men's basketball games can be determined by how much season-ticket holders contribute to the athletic department's fund-raising arm, a Douglas County District Court judge has determined.

District Judge Jack Murphy last week dismissed a lawsuit by season-ticket holders challenging a priority points system that will go into effect next season. The new policy reserves some of the best seats in Allen Fieldhouse for season-ticket buyers who donate $5,000 to the Williams Educational Fund.

In his ruling, Murphy said, "there is nothing impermissible about tying season-ticket purchases to athletic fund contributions."

The judge cited a 2001 favorable ruling for Wichita State University in a lawsuit by fans who challenged a donation plan implemented at that school to determine seat locations for basketball games.

Topeka attorney Brock Snyder, a 40-year season-ticket holder and lawyer for the plaintiffs, said he will not get to keep three seats he had in the fifth row of a lower section, and he doesn't intend to buy seats farther from the court.

Another plaintiff in the case, Topeka resident Frank Godding, has held season tickets for the past 53 years. Both Godding and Snyder were among 121 season-ticket holders notified last season they would lose their priority seats and be reassigned for the next season unless they made the donation.

The university plans to send letters to the holders of about 9,000 season basketball tickets next week informing them of their priority points totals.

Fox to roll out college sports TV network

Fox Sports will unveil a three-channel college sports network this fall that will feature more than 800 live NCAA events a year, the Associated Press has reported.

The three regional channels, formerly part of Fox Sports Digital Nets, will be available in approximately 20 million homes, Fox said in making the announcement Tuesday.

Digital subscribers will have all three channels — Eastern, Central and West.
