BIRMINGHAM — Alabama-Birmingham coach Mike Anderson, who led the Blazers to an NCAA Tournament upset of Kentucky this season, has received a new five-year contract worth up to $775,000 annually.

The compensation committee of the University's of Alabama System Board of Trustees approved the deal Thursday.

The deal includes a base salary of $600,000 plus up to $175,000 in incentives for NCAA Tournament appearances and for reaching graduation rate goals.

The contract also includes a one-time buyout of $300,000 if Anderson leaves before the contract expires on April 6, 2009.

"I am glad to have this behind me and I am looking forward to representing UAB for many years to come," Anderson said. "This is where I want to be and I am looking forward to the continued success of Blazer basketball."

Anderson led the Blazers to the NCAA Tournament's round of 16 with a 76-75 upset of the top-seeded Wildcats. He interviewed for coaching positions at Miami and Auburn after the season, but passed o both jobs.

Anderson, who is 43-23 in two seasons at UAB, parlayed the strong season into a raise of about $200,000.

"We are extremely excited to have this worked out and to have Mike staying at UAB," athletic director Watson Brown said. "We spent a great deal of time on this and feel this demonstrates a significant commitment to Mike and our basketball program."

Hamrick snags spot on NCAA baseball panel

LAS VEGAS — Nevada-Las Vegas athletics director Mike Hamrick has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee, the school announced this week.

Hamrick, who served nine years as AD at East Carolina prior to taking the same job at UNLV last August, is replacing New Mexico athletic director on the board.

Hamrick will serve on the committee for a three-year period with his term expiring in September of 2006.

While serving at ECU, Hamrick oversaw a baseball program that made five consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament and earned the region's No. 1 seed three times.

The committee, which determines the field for the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament, is chaired by one-time ECU athletics administrator Charles L. Carr, a senior associate athletics director at Florida State University.

The panel is made up of 10 members, including six Division I-A representatives and four Division I-AA or I-AAA representatives. One member represents each of the eight Division I baseball regions (East, Northeast, Atlantic, South, Central, Mideast, Midwest, West) and two are selected at large.

The members of the committee are:

  • Charlie Carr, senior associate athletics director at Florida State
  • Skip Bertman, athletics director at Louisiana State
  • Robert V. Todd, head baseball coach at Ohio State
  • Robert Staub, senior associate athletics director at the Alabama-Birmingham
  • Robert A. Steitz, senior associate athletics director at Villanova
  • Brian Colleary, athletics director at Duquesne
  • Bill Rowe Jr., athletics director at Southwest Missouri State
  • Michael Gaski, head baseball coach at UNC-Greensboro
  • Chris Monasch, commissioner of the America East Conference
  • Mike Hamrick, athletics director at UNLV
