Buckeyes, Gators go after BCS crown
Ohio State (12-0) and Florida
(12-1) meet for the first time with the Bowl Championship Series title
on the line in Glendale, AZ, tonight.
The Buckeyes feature Heisman Trophy
winning quarterback Troy Smith, who has thrown for 2,507 yards and 30
touchdowns.
The Gators are quarterbacked by senior
Chris Leak, a former Charlotte Independence star who has thrown for 2,729
yards and 22 scores. Gators coach Urban Meyer also has played freshman Tim
Tebow in place of Leak in some crucial situations.
The Buckeyes are bidding for their
fourth national title, the last coming in 2002 under current coach Jim
Tressel, while Florida is looking for its second.
Ohio State has been ranked No. 1
throughout the season and had only one win in which the margin was less than
17 points.
None of Florida's last five wins have
been by more than 10 points. Its only loss was at Auburn, 27-17, on Oct. 18.
The Gators are sixth nationally in scoring defense.
Coverage on FOX is scheduled to start
at 8 p.m.
Police probe death of Southern Cal kicker
The body of Southern
California kicker Mario Danelo was found about 120 feet down a
cliff near Point Fermin lighthouse in the San Pedro section of
Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon.
A preliminary investigation indicated
the fatality was likely an accident, according to a police spokesman.
Danelo, 21, was the son of former NFL
kicker Joe Danelo. The Trojans kicker made 15 of 16 field goal attempts
during the 2006 season and had two field goals in a 32-18 Rose Bowl win over
Michigan.
Lady Pirates triumph over Central Florida
A 22-3 run in the second half propelled
East Carolina to a 62-46 women's basketball victory over Central Florida on
Sunday afternoon in Minges Coliseum.
The Lady Pirates improved to 7-9
overall and 2-1 in Conference USA as Cherie Mills led the win with 14
points.
The ECU women play at Houston on
Wednesday at 8 p.m.
