The Wake Forest-East Carolina basketball game, originally scheduled for Jan. 2, has been moved to Jan. 1 at 2 p.m. in Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem.

The game was moved to Jan. 1 to accommodate Wake Forest fans planning to watch or travel to the Jan. 2 Orange Bowl in Miami.

South Carolina has penalized assistant football coach Brad Lawing for breaking NCAA recruiting rules this past summer when he placed 10 calls to the father of a North Carolina prospect during a so-called dead period, according to an account published by The Columbia (SC) State.

The Gamecocks' defensive line coach has been prohibited from recruiting off campus the past two weeks as part of the school's self-imposed sanctions in the wake of nine NCAA secondary violations the school reported over the past six months, according to a summary released Friday by the athletics department to The State and other media outlets.

Three of the violations involved the football program, including one by Jerri Spurrier, the wife of Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier. After signing day last February, Jerri Spurrier sent hand-written notes to the families of the Gamecocks' signees, a practice which is against NCAA rules. The paper's story indicated that Jerri Spurrier was not aware of the prohibition.

According to cell phone records for Lawing and other assistant coaches, Lawing called the father of prospect Travian Robertson 10 times this past summer during a period when coaches are barred from contacting prospects or their parents.

Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson said Friday that Mississippi State will replace Ole Miss on the Tiger football schedule in 2010 and 2011, according to a Memphis Commercial-Appeal report.

Johnson said the Tigers will open at Mississippi State in 2010 and play host to the Bulldogs to open the 2011 season.

The move was apparently made to accommodate a request from Ole Miss. Johnson said Ole Miss asked to reschedule games in the final two years of their existing contract, which had called for annual season-opening games between the programs through 2011.
