Boise State inserts itself into national title picture

Boise State made its case for national championship consideration as the Broncos stunned Oklahoma 43-42 in overtime to win the Fiesta Bowl and finish 13-0.

After losing an 18-point lead, trailing 35-28, and facing fourth-and-18 in the final seconds of regulation, Boise State quarterback Jared Zabransky hit Drisan James at Oklahoma's 35. James pitched the ball to Jerard Rabb, who took off for a touchdown with seven seconds left.

After Adrian Peterson's 25-yard scoring run opened overtime for Oklahoma (11-3), the Broncos answered with Vinny Perretta's fourth-down scoring pass to Derek Schouman as Zabransky shifted to receiver on the left. Then Boise State went for a 2-point conversion and the win.

On the decisive play, Zabransky looked at three wide receivers to his right, then handed the ball behind his back to tailback Ian Johnson, who raced untouched to the left side and into the end zone.

With the national television cameras rolling, Johnson subsequently asked his girl friend to marry him and she accepted.

Lady Pirates master Marshall in C-USA opener

Jessica Slack’s 16 points led the East Carolina women’s basketball team to a 73-51 win over Marshall on Tuesday night at Minges Coliseum. ECU is 6-8 overall and 1-0 in Conference USA. Marshall dropped to 8-6 and 1-1.

The Lady Pirates return to Minges Coliseum this Friday as they host Southern Miss at 7 p.m.

Alabama coaching search focusing on Saban

Alabama continues to seek Miami Dolphins coach Nick Saban for its football coaching vacancy. Saban, who guided LSU to a national title before moving to the NFL, is reportedly the target of a 7-year Tide offer in the $40 to $50 million range.

Saban has declined comment but met with Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga on Tuesday. Huizenga said Saban asked for another day to make his decision.

Paterno watches Penn State win from press box

Penn State coach Joe Paterno, recovering from a broken leg sustained on the sideline earlier this season, watched the Nittany Lions down Tennessee 20-10 from the press box in the Outback Bowl on Monday.

Tony Hunt had 158 yards rushing in the win and Tony Davis returned an interception 86 yards for a touchdown for Penn State.

In other New Year's day bowls, Auburn edged Nebraska 17-14 in the Cotton, West Virginia rallied past Georgia Tech 38-35 in the Gator, Wisconsin nipped Arkansas 17-14 in the Capital One and Southern Cal expoded past Michigan 32-18 in the Rose after the first half ended in a 3-3 tie.
