Stokes convenes season's first hoops practice

East Carolina opened its 75th season of intercollegiate basketball and its second under head coach Ricky Stokes with its first practice of 2006-07 by working out for three hours inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Friday night, according to an ECU athletic media relations release.

The Pirates return four letterwinners in senior Courtney Captain (8.9 ppg), juniors Taylor Gagnon (1.5 ppg) and Jeremy Ingram (10.3 ppg) and sophomore Sam Hinnant (10.2 ppg). Ten newcomers, including seven freshmen, went through their first collegiate practices.

"It's really exciting to have finally gotten started," Stokes said. "With so many young faces we have to make sure that we continue to take things slow. With that said I really liked the energy, enthusiasm and eagerness they displayed tonight."

East Carolina will practice each of the next four days before taking its mandatory day off on Wednesday.

"It was a very rigorous and challenging preseason," Stokes said. "We did a little more team stuff than we did individual, so we're a little ahead of the game in regards to putting things in offensively. We just want to concentrate on getting better. That's the most important thing that we're going to focus on."

Fans will have their first chance to get a preview of this year's team at the annual Purple-Gold game prior to ECU's homecoming football game against SMU on Saturday, Oct. 21. The game is scheduled for a noon start. The Pirates open the regular season at home against Morgan State on November 11.

Pirate volleyball wins third straight

The East Carolina volleyball team won its third match defeating Southern Miss in five games, 3-2 (30-28, 30-22, 27-30, 28-30, 15-7) on Friday night.

The win by the Pirates snapped a four match winning streak for the host Golden Eagles, according to an ECU athletic media relations release. With the win, ECU improves to 13-9, 4-4 in C-USA while Southern Miss drops to 11-10, 4-3 in Conference USA.

Four Pirates tallied double-digit kills in the win, with Kelley Wernert recording 22 to lead the team. She added 12 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. Mignon Dubenion registered 21 kills, four digs and four blocks while Jaime Bevan had 16 kills. Melissa Zentner recorded her second straight double-digit kills match, with 12. Trish Monroe had 14 digs on the night while Stephanie Turner added 12. Setter Heidi Krug tallied 71 assists on the win.

The Pirates hit .311 on the night, recording 81 kills and 71 digs, with 11 total team blocks.

The Pirates return to action today as the team travels to Orlando , FL, for a 1 p.m. match against Central Florida.

ECU opens women's hoops practice at Rose

The East Carolina women’s basketball team began its fifth year in the Sharon Baldwin-Tener era on Friday night with the squad’s first practice of the 2006-07 season.

The Lady Pirates practiced for two hours Friday night at J.H. Rose High School.

“I was pleasantly surprised with the aggressiveness of our first practice,” Baldwin-Tener said. “As most first practices go, there were a lot of turnovers, but the effort and intensity of the players is where we need it to be.”

ECU returns nine letterwinners and four starters off last year's squad that tallied a 17-12 record, the team’s best finish in 14 years. Joining the team this season will be freshmen Lauren Cochran, Erica Crumlin and Shana Franks. Cochran and Crumlin will play the forward/center position while Franks will share time with returning sophomore Jasmine Young at the point guard position.

The Lady Pirates will hold their annual Purple-Gold game on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 1:00 p.m. as part of the ECU Homecoming festivities. The regular season begins Nov. 12 as ECU travels to Harrisonburg , VA, for a 2:00 p.m. tilt against James Madison.
