Aundrae Allison on Biletnikoff watch list

East Carolina senior wide receiver Aundrae Allison has been named to the 2006 Biletnikoff Award watch list, according to an announcement from the ECU athletic media relations department.

The honor, given annually to the nation's outstanding college football receiver, is sponsored by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation. The award will be presented on the ESPN College Awards Show.

Allison, a Kannapolis native, was named to the Conference USA preseason all-conference team. In 2005, he became the first player in ECU history to pick up over 1,000 receiving yards (1,024) on his way to first-team All C-USA honors.

SEC's artificial noise penalties reinstated

The NCAA Football Rules Committee granted the Southeastern Conference’s request to retain the penalty structure for its artificial noisemaker rule during football games this season, according to an announcement at ncaa.org.

Before the start of the current season, the committee eliminated the “crowd noise” rule, which, in turn, eliminated the penalty structure of the SEC’s artificial-noisemaker rule.

Before this season, playing rule penalties for the NCAA “crowd noise” rule were a loss of timeout and/or a 5-yard penalty against the home team.

The SEC rule states that artificial noisemakers shall not be permitted to be brought into or used in SEC football stadiums. Each institution should have statements printed on tickets and notices to the effect that such noisemakers will not be permitted inside its competition areas.

For football, game officials are responsible for enforcing the conference ban on artificial noisemakers using the following procedures:

  • The first time the referee detects the significant use of artificial noisemakers by those in the crowd, he will call a referee’s timeout and issue a verbal warning through the public address system.
  • A second incident earns a 5-yard penalty against the offending institution.
  • After a third and any subsequent incident, a 15-yard penalty shall be assessed.

The SEC artificial noisemaker rule has been in effect since the early 1970's. The penalty structure for the rule was put into place in 2002.

The use of the SEC’s artificial noisemaker rule became effective immediately for Saturday's games.

ECU volleyball falls to North Florida

East Carolina's volleyball team fell to North Florida 3-0 in first round action of an invitational event hosted by Charlotte, an ECU Athletics press release reported.

The Ospreys won in three straight games, 30-22, 30-24, 30-25. With the win, UNF improves to 5-3 on the year while the Pirates fall to 4-4.

Offensively, the Pirates were led by Kelley Wernert, who had 12 kills in the match. Mignon Dubenion added 10 kills.

Trish Monroe led ECU on the defensive end with 13 digs.

Heidi Krug is now just 22 assists away from becoming the all-time assists leader, as she tallied 34 assists on the match.
