Pirate baseball announces fall scrimmages

East Carolina's baseball team will conclude its fall practice this weekend with three intra-squad scrimmages on Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium beginning on Friday at 7:30 p.m., according to an ECU athletic media relations release.

The Pirates, who started the 13-day practice session on Sept. 11, will also play a nine-inning simulated game on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m., and Monday, Sept. 25 at 5 p.m., with free admission to fans.

Under the direction of first-year head coach Billy Godwin, the Pirates finished the 2006 season with a 33-26 overall record. The team's wins included victories over nationally-ranked Rice, Tulane (twice) and N.C. State, as well as Houston.

The Pirates resume individual workouts Oct. 2 through Dec. 6 and are scheduled to report back as a team on Jan. 10, 2007, to prepare for the upcoming season.

Tulane football in ESPN spotlight today

The Tulane football team will once again take center stage in the national spotlight when ESPN's "Outside the Lines" airs its feature on the Green Wave Friday on ESPN at 3:00 p.m., according to an announcement on the Conference USA website.

ESPN crews spent several days following Tulane as it prepared for the first game of the year against Houston and then returned this past week following the Green Wave's 32-29 road victory over Southeastern Conference member Mississippi State. ESPN's Bob Ley, who addressed the Tulane football team on Wednesday, will narrate the segment, which will take viewers inside the Green Wave football team, both on and off the field.

Tulane is "Back home in the Dome" in 2006 and will play its first home game in the Louisiana Superdome since 2004 on Saturday, Sept. 30 against Southern Methodist at 7:30 p.m. before a national television audience on College Sports Television.

Southern Miss AD will chair NCAA group

Richard C. Giannini, athletic director at Southern Mississippi since 1999, was recently named chairman of the prestigious NCAA postseason football licensing subcommittee for the next two years, according to an announcement on the Conference USA website.

Giannini will serve a two-year term as chairman until the fall of 2008. The committee includes one representative from each conference in the NCAA bowl championship division. Its charge is to review applications for certification from postseason football contests and make recommendations to the cabinet, and to monitor and make recommendations regarding legislation related to certified football contests.

Giannini has represented C-USA on the NCAA championship cabinet for the last two years and is a member of the football postseason committee.
