Bearcats dancers repeat as national champs

ORLANDO — For the second year in a row, the University of Cincinnati hip hop dance team has won a National Championship.

The Bearcats dance squad claimed the title earlier this month at the 2005 College Cheerleading and Dance Team Championship. The event has held at Walt Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando.

Cincinnati bettered 13 other teams in the competition, including eight of the nation’s best in the finals.

The Bearcats also participated in the Division I-A Dance finals, coming home with a fourth place finish in that competition. That finish was a team-best for the Bearcats, topping a fifth place finish in 1997 and last year’s sixth place effort.

Cincinnati's cheerleaders also competed during the event, led by the all-girl squad which captured seventh place overall. In the Division I-A finals, the Bearcats placed 15th in a field of 22 squads.

During the course of the competition, Cincinnati was one of only two schools to have teams compete in the finals in all four categories, an achievement matched only by Conference USA rival Memphis.

The Tigers finished second to the Bearcats in the hip hop category.
