DENVER — A group seeking to launch a bowl game in Denver that would have pitted a Mountain West Conference team against one from the Big 12 is holding off on its plans, Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson acknowledged last week.

Meanwhile plans to add a second bowl in San Diego are going forward, Thompson said. A sponsor already is lined up for the game, which organizers hope would pit a Mountain West team against one from the Pac-10, he said.

If approved by the NCAA in April, the new bowl game would be played before Christmas and the San Diego-based Holiday Bowl.

The Mountain West last year had deals for teams to play in the Liberty, Las Vegas and Emerald bowls. The conference has one year left on its contract with the Emerald Bowl, but deals with the Liberty and Las Vegas bowls have expired.

With the current BCS contract due to expire in 2006, Thompson is supporting one-year bowl deals for the league for the 2005 season.
