East Carolina, in a manner of speaking, captured its second home victory in four days on Tuesday afternoon when the junior varsity Pirates dispatched of visiting Hargrave Military Academy 19-7.

The win by ECU's JV team came on the heels of the varsity Pirates 27-25 conquest of Tulane last Saturday on the same Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium turf.

One of the game's stars turned heads with his performance at his new position. Newly-converted sophomore linebacker Patrick Dosh recorded a game-high nine tackles and a sack to spearhead a Pirate defensive unit which allowed just 92 total yards as ECU snapped the Tigers' six-game winning streak.

Dosh, who transferred to ECU from Florida as a quarterback prior to the 2003 season, was moved to the defensive unit prior to the varisty's Tulane contest. After seeing action on special teams and on one play in the win over the Green Wave, Dosh's Tuesday outing with the jayvees marked his first official full-time stint in battle.

Offensively, freshman quarterback Patrick Pinkney completed 10-of-22 passes for 127 yards and a pair of TDs while sophomore running back Edwin Burke topped all ground gainers with 98 yards on 14 carries.

Freshman Steven Rogers led ECU receivers with four catches for 87 yards and two scores while junior Bryson Bowling also logged a touchdown reception. Sophomore receiver Will Bland, who picked up 36 yards on a pair of catches, also tossed a 39-yard pass on a flea-flicker play in the first quarter.

The Tigers (6-1) jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead early in the first quarter, benefiting from a blocked punt on East Carolina's first offensive possession. Hargrave converted the turnover into a touchdown on a three-yard run by Greenville product and N.C. State signee Andre Brown.

Bland capped a five-play, 70-yard drive with his scoring pass to Rogers with 4:48 to play in the opening period before the Pirates added a Pinkney-to-Bowling 14-yard TD toss with just 1:15 remaining in the opening half to stake ECU to a 12-7 intermission lead.

The Pirates (1-0) closed out the scoring with a 19-yard TD pass from Pinkney to Rogers, which capped a nine-play, 63-yard drive midway through the fourth quarter and helped push the ECU lead to 19-7.

After surrendering 67 total first half yards, East Carolina limited Hargrave to just 25 in the final 30 minutes. That stat was punctuated by the Tigers' second half rushing total of -8 yards.

Junior defensive end Lorenza Pickett totaled eight stops for the Pirates, including two for lost yardage, as ECU held Brown, the Hargrave's leading rusher, to just 46 yards on 13 carries.

It was the ECU JV team's first outing of the season

Toronto approves bid to host bowl game

TORONTO — A plan to bid for a college football bowl game here next year won support last week from a committee of the Toronto Council.

A U.S.-based group, Sports World Interactive, wants to stage a game between teams from the Big East and Mid-America conferences at SkyDome in December 2005.

``One of the key economic benefits is the broadcast contract of the bowl game,'' said Duncan Ross, executive director of Tourism Toronto. ``This will be seen by millions in the U.S.A., and perhaps some of those people will be introduced to Toronto for the first time.''

The economic development and parks committee, hearing estimates that the game could pump as much as $20 million into the local economy, decided to endorse the bid and send a representative to the NCAA's event-certification meeting next April.

The city's support doesn't leave it open to any financial obligations, because Sports World Interactive has to acquire the TV deal, SkyDome contract, teams and sponsors, Ross said.

``We're just simply endorsing it and allowing the city to be hosting the event,'' committee chairman Brian Ashton said. ``It's all managed, and all the risks are with the NCAA and the promoting company.''
