East Carolina, off to an 0-4
start and desperately searching for a win, will have to figure out a way to
live up to its rare favorite's role in Saturday's homecoming game with
Tulane without the services of one of its best and most experienced players.
Senior wide receiver Damarcus Fox
has been suspended indefinitely from the team for a violation of team rules,
ECU coach John Thompson announced Tuesday afternoon.
Fox told the Kinston Free Press that
""Coach Thompson and I had a disagreement. We weren't on the same page. He
called me into his office and we decided this was best for all sides."
The
newspaper's account of the
suspension appears in today's edition of the Free Press.
Fox, a former prep star at
Greenville's D.H. Conley High School, has been the Pirates' leading receiver
in overall receiving yards (267), average yards per reception (20.5) and
receiving yards per game (89.0). He stands number two on the team in catches
with 13.
Thompson indicated in a press
release issued by ECU's sports information office that the suspension was
effective immediately.
No reason was indicated for
the sudden suspension, which occurred only hours after all appeared normal
earlier in the day when Fox was out and about with other members of the
team.

and Kinston Free Press reports.
Holtz sanctions receiver over academic issues
COLUMBIA — South Carolina starting wide
receiver Matthew Thomas has been suspended for academic reasons.
Thomas will be suspended for at least
three weeks because of issues related to class attendance and other academic
matters, coach Lou Holtz said Tuesday.
``People who come to school here are
going to be student-athletes,'' Holtz said.
Sophomore Noah Whiteside will move into
the starting lineup, Holtz said.
The 25th-ranked Gamecocks (4-1) play
Mississippi at home on Saturday.
