College football weekend: stars & storylines

STARS

 —  Eric Shelton, Louisville, tied a school record with five rushing touchdowns in the No. 22 Cardinals' 59-7 rout of East Carolina.

 —  DeAngelo Williams, Memphis, rushed for a school-record 262 yards and scored four touchdowns in a 41-14 win over Houston.

 —  Hawaii's Timmy Chang threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns and moved into second place on the NCAA's career passing yardage list as the Warriors defeated Tulsa 44-16. Chang passed Philip Rivers' mark of 13,484 yards and is chasing the 13-year-old NCAA mark of 15,031 yards set by Brigham Young's Ty Detmer from 1988-91.

STILL WINLESS

Army's losing streak was extended to 19 games  —  the longest in the nation  —  as Texas Christian beat the Black Knights 21-17. Lonta Hobbs scored his second touchdown with 41 seconds left to rally TCU, which scored 21 straight points after trailing 17-0. Army has not won at home since a 42-37 victory over Tulane on Oct. 27, 2001.

DEFENSELESS

Rice and San Jose State played in the highest-scoring regulation game in Division I-A history, with the Spartans winning 70-63. The 133 points surpassed the total from Middle Tennessee State's 70-58 victory over Idaho on Oct. 6, 2001. Both schools combined for 19 touchdowns to break the Division I-A record of 18 that had been accomplished twice, most recently by Middle Tennessee and Idaho in their 2001 game.

FULLER SURPRISES

Vincent Fuller scored on a 74-yard blocked field goal return and intercepted Rasheed Marshall's pass with 18 seconds left to help Virginia Tech upset West Virginia 19-13 Saturday. Last year, the Hokies' national title aspirations were dashed by the No. 6 Mountaineers in a 28-7 loss at West Virginia.

BUSY DAY

DeAngelo Williams rushed for a school-record 262 yards and became the Tigers' leading career rusher with 2,866 yards as Memphis beat Houston 41-14. Williams scored four touchdowns while breaking the mark of 260 yards by Paul 'Skeeter' Gowen against Tulsa in 1969 and the career mark by Dave Casinelli (2,636) from 1960-63. Williams' rushing mark also eclipsed the record for yards by an opponent against Houston, set by LSU's Kevin Faulk in 1996, who had 246 in 1996.

33-YEAR STREAK SNAPPED

Northwestern's 33-27 upset victory over No. 7 Ohio State was the Wildcats' first win over the Buckeyes since 1971. Snapping Ohio State's 24-game winning streak in the series and handing them their first loss in Evanston since 1958.

TECH TWO

Louisiana Tech beat a ranked team for the second time in school history with a 28-21 upset of No. 17 Fresno State. The Bulldogs' only other win against a ranked team came in 1999, when the Bulldogs beat No. 18 Alabama 29-28 in Tuscaloosa.

DECLAWED

No. 3 Georgia ended LSU's hopes of making another run at No. 1 as the Bulldogs beat the No. 13 Tigers 45-16. David Greene set a school record by throwing five touchdown passes for Georgia, which had scored only three touchdowns in its last two victories. Greene tied Johnny Rauch as the winningest quarterback in school history with his 36th victory as a starter.

EARLY RISERS

Bowling Green had a school-record 442 yards of total offense in the first half of its 70-16 rout of Temple. Omar Jacobs threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns in the first half to help the Falcons lead 42-9 at the break  —  one point shy of tying a school record for points in the first half.

SWEET 16

No. 23 Boise State extended the longest winning streak in the nation to 16 games with a 38-20 victory over Southern Methodist.

STREAKING

No. 16 Florida won 45-30 to extend its winning streak against Arkansas to five games  —  every matchup since the Razorbacks joined the Southeastern Conference in 1992. ... No. 19 Michigan beat Indiana 35-14 for its third straight win and 13th consecutive victory over the Hoosiers since 1987. ... Oklahoma State improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1997, beating Iowa State 36-7 Saturday. The No. 25 Cowboys held the Cyclones to just 59 yards rushing on 37 carries. ... Nebraska beat the Jayhawks for the 36th straight year with a 14-8 win over Kansas. Only Notre Dame's 40-game streak against Navy is longer in Division I-A. ... Mississippi beat Arkansas State for the 12th straight time with a 28-21 victory. The last time the Indians defeated the Rebels was in 1915. ... Boston College beat Division I-AA Massachusetts 29-7 for its fifth straight win over the Minutemen since 1978. UMass hasn't beaten a Division I-A team since 1984. ... Louisiana-Monroe's losing streak was extended to nine, following a 31-10 defeat by Wyoming.

SPEAKING

``All the coaches kept reminding us how they just gave it to us last year. So they came to our house, and we had to give it back.''  —  Virginia Tech defensive end Jim Davis, on his team's 19-13 win over the No. 6 Mountaineers. Last year, the Hokies' national title aspirations were dashed by a 28-7 loss at West Virginia.
