College football weekend: stars & storylines
STARS
Tielor Robinson, Army,
scored five touchdowns to help the Black Knights snap the longest losing
streak in the nation at 19 with a 48-29 victory over Cincinnati.
Sonny Cumbie, Texas Tech,
threw for 436 yards and five touchdowns in the Red Raiders' 70-10 victory
over Nebraska.
Marcus Randall, LSU, came
off the bench and threw two touchdown passes, including a 10-yarder with 27
seconds to play, to help No. 24 LSU upset No. 12 Florida 24-21.
Jerome Mathis, Hampton,
caught seven passes for 234 yards and three long touchdowns, helping Hampton
rally past Gardner-Webb 48-25.
GOOD KNIGHTS
Army snapped the nation's longest
losing streak at 19 with a 48-29 victory over Cincinnati. The Black Knights'
last victory came on Nov. 16, 2002, against Tulane, and their last home win
was Oct. 27, 2001, also against Tulane.
CREAMED CORN
Texas Tech beat Nebraska 70-10, the
worst lost in the Cornhuskers' storied 114-year history. Before Saturday,
the most points scored against Nebraska came in a 62-36 loss to Colorado in
2001. Nebraska's largest previous margin of defeat was 54, set in a 54-0
loss to Minnesota in 1943 and matched in a 54-0 loss to Indiana in 1944 and
a 61-7 loss to Minnesota in 1945.
HEAVYWEIGHTS
No. 1 Southern California's 23-17 win over No. 7 California was the first
time in 52 years the Golden Bears and Trojans met with both teams ranked in
the top 10. ... No. 14 Michigan's 27-24 win over No. 13 Minnesota was the
first time both teams were ranked for a game in Ann Arbor since 1949.
800 NUMBER
Notre Dame became just the second
Division I-A team to win 800 games with a 23-15 win over Stanford. Michigan
has 838 victories following its win over Minnesota.
DRAWING A BLANK
Texas lost to Oklahoma 12-0, getting
shut out for the first time in 282 games and ending the longest streak in
the country. The Sooners limited the Longhorns' rushing attack, which
entered the game as the nation's best at 353.5 yards per game, to 154 yards.
SHUTOUT
VMI was blanked by Georgetown 21-0, the
Keydets' first shutout since a 34-0 loss to William & Mary in 2001.
SNAPPED
East Carolina ended a nine-game home
losing streak with 27-25 win over Tulane. It also marked the first home win
for second-year coach John Thompson. ... No. 3 Georgia snapped its 17-game
winning home streak the second-longest in school history
with a 19-14 loss to No. 17 Tennessee. The Volunteers snapped a
four-game losing streak to the Bulldogs, beating them for the first time
since 1999. ... No. 23 Maryland snapped a 13-game home winning streak with a
20-7 loss to Georgia Tech. The Terrapins were undefeated at home since
September 2002 and 21-1 at Byrd Stadium since coach Ralph Friedgen took over
the program in 2001. ... Texas Tech recorded its first victory in eight
tries against Nebraska, dismantling the Cornhuskers 70-10. ... Kansas
snapped an 11-year losing streak to Kansas State with a 31-28 victory.
STREAKING
Southern California extended its
winning streak to 14 games with a 23-17 win over California. ... Oklahoma's
12-0 victory over Texas stretched its winning streak in the storied rivalry
to five straight. ... No. 6 Auburn beat Louisiana Tech 52-7 and is 6-0 for
the first time since the 1997 season. ... Wisconsin is 6-0 for the first
time since 1998 following a 24-13 win over Ohio State.
SLUMPING
Illinois' 38-25 loss to Michigan State
was the Illini's 11th consecutive Big Ten loss. ... Temple dropped its final
Big East opener and lost in conference play for the ninth straight time,
27-22 to Pittsburgh. ... VMI has lost seven straight games after a 21-0 loss
to Georgetown.
STRONG IN DEFEAT
Aaron Rodgers tied an NCAA record by
completing his first 23 passes for California in a 23-17 loss to Southern
California. ... Gino Guidugli threw for 350 yards and four touchdowns in
Cincinnati's 48-29 loss to Army. ... Jerious Norwood ran for 201 yards in
Mississippi State's 27-13 loss to UAB.
MOUNT DOOM
Mount Union won its 99th straight
regular-season game, 49-7 over Wilmington. The Division III Purple Raiders
have won 89 straight in the Ohio Conference and haven't lost an OAC or
regular-season game since 1994.

of my life. We're probably the laughingstock of the nation.''
