Texas Christian has gone from being part of
a Bowl Championship Series debate to a team unlikely to even share the
Conference USA title. TCU looks for a little consolation following a
crushing loss when it closes out its regular season Saturday against woeful
Southern Methodist in the 84th meeting for the Iron Skillet.
The 19th-ranked Horned Frogs (10-1, 7-1) hoped to create headaches for BCS
officials by finishing the season as the only other unbeaten Division I-A
team along with top-ranked Oklahoma.
Attempting to force the BCS to choose a team from a non-BCS conference to
play in one of the four big-money bowls for the first time, the pressure may
have gotten to the Frogs, as they lost 40-28 at Southern Mississippi on
Thursday night.
``There aren't any good words,'' TCU coach Gary Patterson said of the many
phone calls of condolence that he the day after the disappointing loss to
the Golden Eagles.
Dustin Almond threw for 227 yards and three touchdowns, and USM Eagles
capitalized on four TCU turnovers. TCU didn't appear ready for the challenge
of going unbeaten for most of the game, as it trailed 31-6 early in the
fourth quarter before scoring three touchdowns in a span of 4:30 with the
aid of two straight recovered onside kicks.
TCU could have a tough time getting up for Saturday's contest, although it
would take a major letdown for them not to close out the season with a win.
Dallas-area rival SMU is 0-11 and has lost its last two games by a combined
82-26 score.
Plus, the Frogs do have some motivation for Saturday, as a victory would at
least give them a chance to share the C-USA title with Southern Miss. TCU
would need to win Saturday and have 1-10 East Carolina spring the upset of
the college football season on Southern Miss.
The Mustangs have been off since Nov. 15, when they lost 41-20 to Rice. The
series between TCU and SMU is tied 38-38-7, though the Frogs have won the
last four meetings.
