SATURDAY'S STARS:
Derrick Knight, Boston College, ran for
197 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-12 upset over No. 12 Virginia Tech.
Chris Henry, West Virginia, had six catches for 209 yards and two
touchdowns as No. 25 West Virginia beat Syracuse 34-23.
Carnell Williams, Auburn, finished with 204 yards and two scores,
including an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage, in
Auburn's 28-23 victory over Alabama.
LIONS CAGED: Penn State's 41-10 loss to
Michigan State ended the worst season in Joe Paterno's 38 years as coach.
The Nittany Lions (3-9) lost nine games for the first time in school history
and are only the fourth losing team in Paterno's career.
TROPHY CASES: Duke reclaimed the Victory
Bell with a 30-22 win over North Carolina. ... Clemson scored its most
points ever in the 101-game series with South Carolina, routing the
Gamecocks 63-17. South Carolina surrendered the most points in the rivalry
since the Tigers' 51-0 win in 1900. ... Auburn's 28-23 win over Alabama was
the first Iron Bowl matchup in which the teams entered with a combined 12
losses.
GOOD HANDS: Larry Fitzgerald had seven
catches for 102 yards in Pittsburgh's 30-16 win over Temple, and extended
his NCAA record for consecutive games with a touchdown to 17.
SHUTOUTS: No. 9 Tennessee blanked
Vanderbilt 48-0, beating the Commodores for the 21st straight year. ... Utah
became the first team to shut out Brigham Young in 28 years with a 3-0
victory. The Cougars hadn't been shut out since losing at Arizona State 20-0
in 1975 an NCAA-record span of 361 games.
SNAPPED: Duke ended a 13-game losing streak
against North Carolina with a 30-22 win. The Blue Devils hadn't beaten the
Tar Heels since 1989, when Steve Spurrier was coach.
STREAKING: No. 18 Miami of Ohio won its 10th straight - 49-31 over Ohio -
extending its longest winning streak since 1975.
SLUMPING: After a 29-17 loss to Virginia,
Georgia Tech hasn't won at Scott Stadium since beating the top-ranked
Cavaliers in 1990. ... Vanderbilt finished with a losing record for the 21st
straight season after a 48-0 loss to Tennessee.
SPEAKING: "This is as bad a football game
as we've played in a long time. I want to get out of here, get on a plane,
go home and hug my wife." - Joe Paterno after Penn State's 41-10 loss to
