Two mid-Atlantic frontcourt players whose verbal commitments to East Carolina were reported by Bonesville.net in recent months have followed through on their pledges.

ECU head coach Bill Herrion announced Thursday that Mike Castro, a 6-8, 235-pound forward at Allegany (MD) College and Charles Bronson, a 6-10, 220-pound center from Philadelphia have signed letters-of-intent to play for the Pirates in the 2004-05 season.

Castro averaged 8.1 points and 6.9 rebounds and helped Allegany to a conference championship last season, while Bronson averaged 17.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game at Philadelphia Lutheran High School in 2002-03.

49ers' haul includes hometown All-American

Charlotte basketball coach Bobby Lutz has announced the signing of prized recruit and Charlotte native E.J. Drayton to a letter of intent to play with the 49ers beginning in 2004-05.

Drayton, a preseason first team junior college All-America out of Colby (KA) Community College, is ranked as the top junior college combo forward by NBADraft.net. The 6-8 Drayton averaged 17.8 points and 7.6 rebounds last season, helping Colby to a 26-7 record.

Drayton, who formerly attended Vance High School, joins 6-8 junior college post player Chris Nance from Redlands (OK) Community College and 6-3 point guard Leemire Goldwire, a product of Palm Beach Gardens (FL) Dwyer High School in the 49ers fall recruiting class.

Cards ink two-game football pact with Miami

LOUISVILLE — The University of Louisville and Miami (Fla.) have agreed to a two-game series in football beginning next season, according to U of L Director of Athletics Tom Jurich.

The Cardinals will visit Miami in 2004 while the Hurricanes are scheduled to return to Louisville for a game in 2006. Next season's meeting is tentatively scheduled for October 9,

"We're excited to have a home-and-home series with a program as prestigious as the University of Miami," said Jurich.

The Cardinals and Hurricanes have met on nine other occasions with Miami holding an 8-0-1 series advantage. However, next season's meeting will be the first between the two programs since 1985, when the Hurricanes defeated the Cardinals, 45-7, in the Orange Bowl.

Louisville (7-3, 3-3 Conference USA) is guaranteed its sixth straight winning season and is also bowl eligible for the sixth consecutive year. The Cardinals host Houston this Saturday in their final home game of the season.

Marquette's Matthews suspended to shore up academics

MILWAUKEE — Marquette freshman forward James Matthews has been suspended from basketball-related activities to concentrate on academics, coach Tom Crean said Thursday.

Crean said he and Matthews had agreed from the start that ``there are standards for this program which are nonnegotiable.''

``At this point, James has been suspended from all team activities so that he can concentrate on his academic responsibilities,'' Crean said in a statement. ``We both want what is best for James now and in the future.''

The 6-foot-8 Matthews did not play in the Golden Eagles' season-opening win over St. John's in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
